Welcome back to school AVCTC clients. We are looking forward to seeing many of our clients who were off for summer!
While your child starts their first week(s) back, here are some strategies from The Inspired Treehouse to help make the school year more successful and peaceful!
Another thing to keep in mind is the importance of providing structure and consistency for your child as well as making time for things that will recharge their batteries. For me, I am also transitioning back to the school year and this can be an overwhelming time, trying to manage all the things that come with it. In order to get through I must make time to recharge my batteries. I do this by scheduling time for myself to do things that I know make me feel good: a visit with a friend, working out, or relaxing with my dog. In addition, I know that I benefit from having a consistent routine that I can predict and know of in advance.
Our kiddos often have difficulties with the executive functioning skills necessary to plan and organize their days/time effectively. It is important for a child to have an understanding of what is expected of them in a given day. This can ease many difficulties that arise during these major transitions. I suggest providing your child with some type of visual or discussion of what the day, week or even month might hold for them. This varies greatly by the child's age and functional abilities. This can be as simple as a handwritten "schedule" of the day with words or images depicting the plan for the day or as complex as having a weekly family meeting where you all pull out your planners for the week to discuss what is going on that week.
Finally, in our day and age we our children are often so busy going from activity to activity or appointment to appointment. It is important to find time for them to engage in activities that energize them and recharge their batteries.
